De/Reconstructing Mata Hari
The name Mata Hari evokes many images: exoticism, eroticism, dance, spying,
international relations, nudity, feminism, criminal most of all, the name
evokes confusion and uncertainty. Who was she? What was she? Recently
revealed within previously secret documents, it is now clear that behind all of
the (mis)perceptions there lies a very simple but compelling story. Come and
see how Yatkin draws upon ancient myths, Eastern dance traditions, contemporary
dance, poetry, physical and psychological theories to unravel the mystery.
This work was finalist for 6 Metro DC Dance Awards and and received two
MDCD awards for Best Production and Best Individual Dance as well as the
first prize from he National Press Association for best Photography.
De/Reconstructing Mata Hari is co-commissioned by Dance Place in partnership with Miami Dade
College, Cultural Affairs in Miami, the National Performance Network Creation Fund and Center
Stage at Reston as well as in part supported by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
