About the Performance
What does it mean to embody the archetype of the witch in today’s world?
The Other Witch is a powerful multimedia solo performance by 2023 Guggenheim Fellow Nejla Yatkin, inspired by Mary Wigman’s iconic Hexentanz (Witch Dance).
Originally created in the early twentieth century, Hexentanz emerged during a period of profound social and cultural transformation. More than a century later, Yatkin revisits the witch archetype through the lens of contemporary life, exploring feminine power, intuition, transformation, and the relationship between the individual and the collective unconscious.
Drawing from her roots in German Ausdruckstanz, Japanese Butoh, and contemporary dance, Yatkin creates a visceral dialogue between past and present, inviting audiences into a world where movement, imagery, and memory intersect.
Rather than reconstructing Wigman’s historic choreography, The Other Witch reimagines its themes for our time, asking how the body carries history and how ancient archetypes continue to resonate in a changing world.
