After excerpt from 2002.
I will be in New York from September 7–13, with performances on September 11 and 12 at the Here Arts Center. During the program, I will perform a seven-minute excerpt from After, originally a 25-minute work, and I will also dance in and choreograph three other sections of 11Reflections: NYC.
I created After in 2002 with support from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts through its Local Dance Commissioning Project. Inspired by the strength and resilience that can emerge in the wake of tragedy, the work traces the intertwined thoughts and emotions experienced by individuals and communities as they confront profound loss and gradually move toward acceptance and peace. It is a meditation on war, its enduring consequences, and our human capacity to heal.
Returning to this dance 24 years later has been deeply revealing. As I look at the work now, I sometimes feel that I created too much movement. The body I inhabit today seeks more space, stillness, and reflection than the body that created the piece 24 years ago. Revisiting After has become a conversation between those two bodies between who I was then and who I am now.
