Dancing Around The World - Paris
Workshop Intensive with Nejla Yatkin.
What moves Paris?

Join Nejla Yatkin to explore both intimately and broadly the interaction of people, movement and the environment through dance and movement. Join us to learn to move and play through space and time.
The more you have experienced your being in different ways and the more engaged you are with what you experience, the more you have to share with the participant viewer and yourself. Your palette as a mover is rife with possibilities. In this workshop we will explore what moves people and how people in Paris move. After a intensive contemporary warm-up phase we will create awareness through guided improvisation exercises to experience individual movement qualities, sensations, and dynamics as well as to create an understanding how you relate with other bodies in space and time. Additionally we will create phrases to share with each other and in space. Selected participants will also have the possibility to perform it in various selected sites in the city as well as on camera at the end of the workshop.

Class structure: Nejla Yatkins class begins with a thorough warm-up focused on strengthening, lengthening, and preparing the body for an investigation of movement possibilities. With a weighted approach, we explore exercises that redirect momentum in and out of the floor and up into the air. This cultivates a sense of ease that allows for an alert dancer, conscious of the body's architecture in off-balance, explosive and suspended three-dimensional situations. We also tackle improvisational problems often using partnered work in dialogue with set phrase work to encourage spatially aware intuitive choice-making. At the base of this class is a joy of movement captured in a final dance that is a complex play of full-bodied potential through space.

Workshop is open to all levels. Musicians are invited to join us to explore the relationship between music and movement.

Dancing Around the World is a year long art project that encourages and engages local communities by cultivating interdisciplinary arts and community. The goal is to explore and make people become aware - both intimately and broadly, of the interaction of people, movement and the environment through dance for a year. Throughout this journey we want to understand what moves people, how people move and express themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually in diverse spaces, and to empower people by making them self aware of the impact their movement and body language has upon the social environment and themselves. They will be discovering community based artistic expression by coordinating motion, dance and sound.
